The Benefits of Massage

There are many different types of massage techniques that aim to loosen out the muscles and tissue in the body. There is no saying which is ‘the best’ type of massage as each has its own benefits.

Sports massage techniques are used to increase blood flow, break down tension or knots in the muscle and increase muscle flexibility. A sports massage is a great recovery tool for the average gym user right through to elite athletes as it uses a blend of massage techniques that aim to help muscles recover quickly and enhance sporting performance.

A general deep tissue massage can benefit absolutely everyone by increasing blood circulation, releasing tension in the body, increasing muscle flexibility and joint mobility and decreasing stress through a reduction of stress hormones, promoting relaxation. During a trigger point massage your therapist will generally work into the knots to release them and reduce your pain and improve your muscle flexibility. Trigger point knots are simply areas where the muscle has become knotted for various reasons like poor posture, sitting for long hours, overtraining and stress to name a few. Trigger point knots are most commonly found in the neck, shoulders and back but can be found in all muscle groups and can badly affect your posture and general feeling of physical well-being. Trigger point knots in the neck could cause tension headaches and migraines.

Massage treatments can be used to treat stress, anxiety, insomnia, DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), soft tissue injuries, muscle tightness, lower back pain and many other conditions. Your therapist is likely to use a mixture of different massage techniques depending on your concern and the findings of your assessment pre-treatment.
